JumpStart - holistic, home-based therapy for autism

When searching for therapy for autism many parents are attracted to JumpStart as it is an autism specific program. It also has several important aspects which are seldom all found within one program.

JumpStart is holistic...

JumpStart is different to most available therapy for autism because it is holistic. JumpStart takes a step by step approach and addresses each problem from numerous angles to ensure the best chance of success. Autism is a complex condition and in my experience is most successfully managed in this way.

For example... if a parent tells me that their child with autism is presenting with challenging behaviour, we will only address the behavioural difficulties after we have looked at communication, play and sensory processing as these can all contribute to challenging behaviour and unless we consider the part they play, we cannot effectively manage behaviour.

"In a relatively short time, JumpStart has given me a very thorough knowledge base, a treasure trove of skills and a confidence and understanding of my child I had previously not thought possible"

JumpStart is home based...

JumpStart is a home-based program. I believe this is essential when providing therapy for autism. The first reason is that children with autism are generally more comfortable in their own environment and respond better to a stranger with their familiar things around them.

The other really important reason is that it gives me the opportunity to observe the child and see how they are interacting with their family members and environment. This means that when I make recommendations to parents about adapting the environment I can be very specific about how this should be done. I also have much more information than if I am relying on the parent to describe what happens at home as it is often difficult to visualise exactly what is happening.

I often tell parents that the best thing that can happen is that their child has a major melt-down in my first session as it gives me so much useful information when designing their individual program.

"By having Tali come into our home environment each week, she was able to see how our family worked and how best to work with us"

JumpStart empowers parents...

The other unique aspect of JumpStart is that it has an excellent parent training program which when combines with the child therapy program generates fantastic results. As autism affects all aspects of a child's functioning, the best therapy for autism is daily life and the learning opportunities it presents. The best people to use these opportunities are parents as they are the ones who spend the most time with the child. Once parents understand not only the difficulties experienced by children with autism but also their unique strengths they can use these strengths to encourage learning.

Communication skills require ongoing work. I teach parents how to adapt their home environment to create opportunities for communication.

Once parents understand sensory processing they can incorporate simple strategies into their daily life which will result in a calmer child more receptive to learning.

I teach parents how to effectively develop their child's play and fine motor skills. This is something that they can do themselves which will contribute to whatever therapy they are having and make it more effective.

We also look at the foundation skills required for effective social interaction with other children and adults.

Once parents have grasped these concepts we then look at behaviour from a position of knowledge and introduce strategies which are most likely to be effective.

We utilise all the knowledge gained thus far when addressing toilet training (should this be an issue) and fussy eaters.

"I have learnt so much from Tali and that knowledge changed our lives. Tali helped me understand my daughter so that I was able to give her what she needed"

"From a parent's perspective, Tali had prepared a very organised folder for me with a week by week or topics to cover. I learned more from Tali in a matter of weeks than I did in a whole year of attending Early Intervention. I finally understood the lingo, as it was so simply explained to me. All the information Tali provided was indeed relevant, practical and useful"

"It is hard to express just how much Tali has helped us. Looking back I can't believe I coped as long as i did without all the skills that Tali has taught me to manage my son's behaviour."

JumpStart is a partnership...

When working with a family I see it as a partnership. I bring my experience providing therapy for autism to the table and the parents bring their expert knowledge about their child and family. Together we are able to work out what will work best for this individual child within their unique family.

For this reason every therapy session is 2 hours long. The first hour (approximately) is spent working with the child (this is the therapy part). The second hour is for the parents and I provide information and strategies for parents to try at home over the next week. This is also an opportunity to tell me what a terrible or great week you have had and get it all off your chest. We will try and introduce some immediate strategies to address problems you are having now, but I may also tell you that we need to work on something else first. This is all part of the JumpStart step by step process.

"The structure of the program was perfect - the one-to-one time with IM was followed by a chance to talk about problems or air concerns. This was incredibly reassuring and productive...it just felt so good to have the luxury of talking so honestly and comfortably with someone who had such an incredible grasp of all the complexities and myriad of issues involved in autism"

JumpStart provides resources...

Over the 10 week program parents build up a folder of information relevant to the individual child and family. This means that Dad's or other family members who may not be around during JumpStart sessions can read up on the strategies being introduced. It also allows parents to refer back after they have completed the program.

When providing therapy for autism it is really important that there are repeated opportunities for learning. For this reason numerous visual supports are provided as part of the resource folder to allow parents to introduce strategies immediately into their daily routine.

"the information folder is a beautifully presented and very concise and valuable resource to refer back to"

JumpStart includes...

JumpStart therapy for autism includes the following topics. Please remember that the program is tailored to the individual child so only relevant topics will be included. For example if a child is already toilet trained, this will not be included:

Gross and Fine motor skills may also be addressed as part of the program as is relevant for the individual child.

My hope is that by the end of the program, parents will feel confident to manage some aspects of their child's therapy for autism independently.

They should also be able to better understand where their child needs ongoing support and therefore be well equipped to choose appropriate ongoing intervention programs with confidence.
